In the world of music, Romeo Santos is a bachata singer who is popular and has had featured artists like Drake and Usher in his music. In the video to the lower right I taught a Bachata dance class to American children who have never danced nor heard of Bachata. For those intereated in celebrities, Michelle Rodriguez, who is widely known for her role in the Fast and Furious sequels, is half Dominican and half PuertoRican. Zoë Saldaña is also half Dominican and half PurtoRican. She is famously known for her role in Avatar, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Star Trek movies. New York Yankee fans and baseball fans know about Alex Rodriguez. The famous Dominican baseball player is an icon for many Dominican-American children. A-Rod is source of pride for many Dominicans in the United States.

Cultural Differences

Many Dominicans face adversities when learning about American customs. The videos on the left demonstrate some differences in the Dominican culture and the American culture. Both videos are in form of skits but talk about differences in discipline, speech, and other daily activities. Dominicans pride themselves in hospitality. Family and family values come before anything (including business). Before leaving home or when talking to someone older the first thing they ask for is "La Bendicion" (God's blessing). In the DR, maintaining eye contact indicates interest and focus. In the US, prolonged eye contact may be uncomfortable. Arriving fashionably late (15-30 mins) is normal in the Dominican Culture whereas, in the United States being late can be viewed as irresponsible.

Dominican Contributions to the United States

The Dominican Republic makes a presence in the US in food, music, cinema, and sports. Depending on the region of the United States, small stores called Bodegas can be found down the street/highway. These bodegas sell toiletries, American products, and Caribbean products essential for cooking.

A small bodega (grocery store) called Los Tigres (The Tigers).
